The Reconquista Route is a long-distance GR-202 trail that, according to Christian legend, follows the historic path Muslim troops followed after their defeat at Covadonga at the hands of Pelayo's troops. It's a demanding route that runs through the heart of the Picos de Europa, passing through iconic sites such as the Lakes of Covadonga, the Cares Route, Poncebos, Bulnes, Sotres, and the Áliva mountain passes, ending in the Cantabrian town of Cosgaya. A comprehensive route that will impress you with the variety and beauty of its landscapes.

For five days, we'll cross the Picos de Europa National Park, staying in spectacular locations and exploring some of the most iconic and beautiful spots in this spectacular National Park. A trek you can't miss.

Trekking Itinerary

On our first day of trekking, we will depart from the Basilica Covadonga (260m), to ascend to the paradisiacal place of the Lakes of Covadonga (1,100m), where we will stay at the Vega de Enol Refuge, an idyllic landscape adjacent to the Lake of the same name and with beautiful views of the main peaks of the Western Massif. A significant elevation gain for the first day, passing through the Vegas de Orandi, Severín, and Fana valleys and crossing beautiful forests. If the weather is good, we'll ascend to Porra de Enol (1,269 m), very close to the refuge, to enjoy breathtaking views.

Distance: 10 km. Elevation: +1,150 m – 280 m

A challenging and beautiful day that passes through the most beautiful valleys of the Picos de Europa and the Cares Trail. We depart from the La Vega de Enol Refuge and head towards the Lake Enol skirting it to reach the Lake of Ercina and then head to Majada de Belbín, a beautiful place. We continue towards Vega Maor, until we reach this large plain, another landmark of this beautiful Massif. From Vega Maor, we will descend to the Cares Route, to complete a section of this spectacular gorge, until reaching Poncebos, where we will spend our second night.

Distance: 17 km. Elevation: +960 m -1,240 m

During this day, we will visit two of the most beautiful villages in the National Park and also Asturias. First we will go to the town of Bulnes, nestled in a beautiful location, with the unique feature of not having road access. We will continue towards the Pandébano Pass, to enjoy unparalleled views of the high peaks of the Massif Central and, above all, the Picu Urriellu, a symbol of the Picos de Europa. From Pandébano, after a short climb, we reach the La Terenosa Refuge, where we will spend our third night.

Distance: 12 km. Elevation: +1,290 m – 490 m

On this day, we set off for the winter quarters of Sotres, and we will walk through the valley of the Duje River, which divides the Central and Eastern Massifs, so the road is truly breathtaking, always flanked by enormous mountains on both sides. We will reach the ports of Áliva, a beautiful place dominated by the stone mass of Old Rock and very close to the Fuente Dé cable car. We will spend the night in the Hotel de Áliva.

Distance: 10 km. Elevation: +840 m -250 m

On our last day, we have a long but beautiful descent from the ports of Áliva towards Espinama, to continue through the forest to the town of Cosgaya, the final destination of this magnificent trek.

Distance: 20 km. Elevation: +330 m -1,320 m
