RING OF PEAKS - MASSIF CENTRAL
The Urrielles Massif or Central Massif of the Picos de Europa, located between the valleys carved by the Cares and Duje rivers, is undoubtedly the most rugged, with the greatest elevation changes, and where the highest and most representative peaks of the Picos de Europa National Park are located. These include Torrecerredo, the highest peak of these mountains and of the entire Cantabrian Mountains at 2,648 meters, or Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes), a true symbol of the Asturian mountains and of the National Park, and a place where the most beautiful pages of mountaineering in the Iberian Peninsula have been written since its conquest in 1905. It is in this massif that these mountains reach their maximum expression, with an unsurpassed high mountain environment, concentrating a large number of peaks in a relatively small area, unmatched in any other mountain range on the peninsula. There are other higher mountains, but not as rugged, wild, or inaccessible.
Over the course of four days, we'll travel from refuge to refuge through this impressive and challenging Massif, discovering some of the most iconic and beautiful spots in the Picos de Europa.
Trekking Itinerary
On our first day of trekking, we will depart from Puente Poncebos (218m), to make the famous, popular and spectacular Cares Route, one of the most impressive gorges in the world, to the Leonese town of Cain (460m). We will continue up the Cares River, to the Vega and Mount of Corona, where we will visit the Chorco de los Lobos, to continue to the beautiful town of Cordiñanes, where we'll stay at the Tombo Hotel, where we'll spend our first night of the trek. This trek will serve as a warm-up for the uneven terrain that awaits us in the following days.
Distance: 18 km. Elevation: +880 m -290 m
Beautiful day, in which we will enter the Central Massif, and which will take us from Cordiñanes (880m), overcoming a significant difference in altitude, up to the Collado Jermoso shelter (2,046m). The route begins by rapidly ascending towards the exit walls of the via ferrata, where we will walk along a narrow terrace to reach the beautiful beech forest of Asotín, which will leave us at the Vega de AsotínFrom here we will ascend to the Collado Jermoso refuge, located in one of the most spectacular and beautiful spots in the entire National Park. Situated on the edge of a cliff and surrounded by the steep peaks of the Llambrión, in front of the spectacular Friero Tower, and with magnificent views of the Valdeón Valley and the Cornión Massif, with Peña Santa standing out. Despite the tough day, everyone will be satisfied with staying in such a place, especially after enjoying the spectacular sunset.
Distance: 9 km. Elevation: +1,420 m -280 m
This day will take you through the high peaks of the Massif Central, rarely reaching altitudes below 2,000 meters. We will head to the most popular refuge in the Picos de Europa, located at the base of the most emblematic peak of the National Park, the Picu Urriellu, and at its most spectacular, its impressive West Face, over 500 meters high, a true benchmark for Spanish mountaineering. An unforgettable place, both for its beauty and its symbolism.
Distance: 10 km. Elevation: +850 m -910 m
We leave the Urriellu refuge to head towards the Cabrones refuge, the base of the mountain sector where the highest peak in the entire National Park is located at 2,648 metres, Torrecerredo. We then head past another emblematic peak, Cabrones, towards the refuge of the same name, where we will stock up on supplies for a long and steep descent from the Cabrones refuge (2,030m) along the Trave slope and the Amuesa Canal to reach the beautiful village of Bulnes (648m), inaccessible by vehicle. From Bulnes, we only have to go down the Tejo Canal to Puente Poncebos (218m), the place where our precious adventure ends.

To take into account
- At the shelters you can buy a picnic for each day, avoiding carrying heavy items.
- There are blankets in the shelters. A light sleeping bag or a sleeping bag sheet is sufficient.
- The route may be subject to changes depending on weather conditions, shelter availability, and/or other circumstances, always keeping the safety of the group in mind.
- Group of 4 to 8 people.
