Vindio Peaks Ring - Western Massif

The Cornión Massif, or Western Massif of the Picos de Europa, was the origin of the creation of the Picos de Europa National Park, originally called the Covadonga Mountain National Park and the first National Park in Spain. It is the largest and most diverse of the three National Parks that make up the Picos de Europa National Park. This massif combines the contrasts of the intense green of the pastoral plains with the aridity of the limestone rock characteristic of the Picos de Europa, along with the spectacular uniqueness of the Lakes of Covadonga. It is the massif that contains the largest forests, beech forests of extraordinary beauty, and where, as in the other Massifs, the lack of water at high altitudes is a problem.

For four days, we'll explore the Cornión Massif, staying in its shelters and exploring some of the most iconic and beautiful spots in this spectacular mountain range in the Picos de Europa National Park.

Trekking Itinerary

We begin the adventure in Posada de Valdeón, the capital of the beautiful Valdeón Valley. On this day, we will climb one of the steepest slopes in the Cornión Massif. From Posada, we will head to the Mirador del Tombo, near Cordiñanes, to descend Monte de Corona and visit the Chorco de los Lobos, to the pretty village of Cain (460m), from where we will enter the spectacular Cares Gorge, traveling through its most beautiful section, crossing bridges and tunnels built in unlikely places, until the Bolín Bridge, where the vertiginous ascent of more than 1,000 meters of altitude difference in just 3 kilometers of distance begins, along the Trea Canal, towards the shelter of Vega de Ario (1,630m), where we will spend our first night of the trek. From the Vega de Ario refuge, we can enjoy one of the best sunsets in the Picos de Europa.

Distance: 17 km. Elevation: +1,350 m -580 m

On our second day of trekking, we will descend towards the Lakes of Covadonga (1,100m), crossing the most beautiful valleys of the Picos de Europa, such as Parres and Belbín. A well-deserved picnic awaits us at the Lakes of Covadonga, before ascending through the valleys and into the heights of the Western Massif, to the Vegarredonda Refuge (1,410 m)., where we will spend our second night. A beautiful day that passes through symbolic places of the Picos de Europa, such as the Lakes themselves or the Pozo del Alemán, a place whose name is due to Roberto Frassinelli, exceptional character.

Distance: 15 km. Elevation: +620 m -770 m

During this long and hard day, we will take one of the most classic routes of the Massif, crossing it from North to South, along the characteristic karst landscape from the high altitudes of Los Peaks of Europe, where the chaos of limestone rock reigns between the jous and the hills, making orientation difficult. This is a good day to see chamois, a characteristic animal of the National Park. During this classic route, we will be accompanied by the highest peaks of the Massif, passing through Vega Huerta to enjoy the impressive view of the South wall (600 meters high) of Holy Rock of Castile, the highest point of the Cornión mountain range at 2,596 metres. From this valley, from which we can also enjoy beautiful views of the Massif Central, we will descend through the Frade pass towards the Vegabaño Refuge (1,320m), located in a magnificent place surrounded by beautiful forests, to enjoy a well-deserved rest, after a long and hard day.

Distance: 16 km. Elevation: +990 m -1,240 m

On our third day, Starting from the Vegabaño Refuge, we will make a long and progressive descent through forests, meadows, sheepfolds, and the most important towns of the beautiful Leonese valley of Valdeón, bordering the Cornión massif on its southernmost slope to reach our starting point and finish this spectacular trekking through The Picos de Europa.

Distance: 10 km. Elevation: +290 m -660 m
