Trekking Peña Ubiña Natural Park
The Asturian part of the massif constitutes the Peña Ubiña-La Mesa Natural Park, which has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since July 11, 2012. The abundant forests are predominantly beech, oak, and birch, and feature high-mountain vegetation. The Puertos de Agüeria area is home to the largest holly forest in Asturias. The Ubiñas massif is home to fauna typical of the Cantabrian coast: deer, wild boar, wolves, deer, chamois, roe deer, otters, capercaillies, and brown bears.
For four days, we will explore this beautiful Massif and its most important and unique corners, reaching the summit that gives it its name and which offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Cantabrian Mountains.
Trekking Itinerary
On our first day of trekking, we will depart from the village of Tuiza from above (1,230m), to ascend to Meicín Shelter (1,549m), located in the center of the beautiful cirque formed by the highest peaks of the massif. From the refuge, we will ascend to Cerreos Rock (2,104m) From here we have good views of Peña Ubiña, which we will climb the following day, Peña Ubiña Pequeña, the cirque where the refuge is located, and a large part of the massif. We descend along the same route.
Distance: 7 km. Elevation: +980 m -555 m
Starting from the Meicín Refuge, we head towards the town of Tuiza from above, from where we will take a beautiful circular route, heading towards the Arrive, beautiful Lake located on a privileged balcony over the Ports of Agüeria and an excellent viewpoint towards Peña Rueda. We will close the route, climbing towards the Bocarón pass, reaching the summit at the Picu Fariñentu to go down directly to Tuiza de arriba, from where we will return to the Meicín Shelter, to enjoy its fantastic food and a well-deserved rest.
Distance: 16 km. Elevation: +1,560 m -1,560 m
Ascent to Peña Ubiña (2,417m). From the Meicín refuge, we will go up to the top of Terreros, and from there, head to the beginning of the normal ascent route to Ubiña Rock, with exceptional views. Return via the same ascent route.
Distance: 9 km. Elevation: +952 m -952 m
On our last day, we will ascend again to Alto Terreros to head to Small Ubiña Rock (2,189m), which is not easier than the big one despite being smaller. After reaching this fantastic summit, we will leave through the Riotuerto passes towards the Axeite ports, from where we will descend through a beautiful valley until Tuiza de Arriba, the final place of our trekking.
